Dear Families,

We are nearing the end of an exceptional year, and a particularly unique final term at school. I am so proud of our HV school community for their collective efforts to support children both at home and at school during these challenging times.

Our staff have made significant shifts to providing both on-site and remote learning opportunities. Parents have played a critical role in supporting their children with remote activities at home and balancing new schedules. Meanwhile, children have adjusted to changes in routines and new expectations with great resilience. Thank you to everyone for making this time as productive and positive as possible.

As always, children at Happy Valley have benefited through the efforts of our amazing Parent Advisory Council. PAC sponsored activities have included Hot Lunches, Family Dances, Movie Nights and several fundraisers. Funds have gone to support classroom supplies, field trips, bus costs, presentations, equipment, technology, library books, music opportunities and more. We want to thank our PAC for their tireless efforts for our school community.

June is always a special time for celebrating learning with classmates and families. While things look different this year, the message is no less important. We are so proud of HV kids for being amazing learners and kind citizens. Thank you for your kind support this year. We wish everyone a safe and happy summer and look forward to a bright school year ahead.

Farewell to our Amazing Grade Fives

Best wishes to our sixty-eight Grade Fives who are heading to Middle School in the fall! We have enjoyed our time with this group and have appreciated them as learners, leaders, role models, athletes, artists, musicians, activists, and more. While we were unable to have our usual assembly and field trip celebration, we are acknowledging these students in other unique ways this year!

The Grade Five teachers have created a video compilation of student voices and messages from their teachers. We hope that you will enjoy hearing your peers share their special memories of Happy Valley. Students will be receiving some special gifts in their report cards. Each child will be receiving a pass to Wild Play Element Park! We hope you will be able to arrange your own field trip with your close friends this summer. A special commemorative class poster was created for Grade Fives. Look for your unique emoji! We hope you will enjoy the mementos of Happy Valley that you will find in your report cards.

Please make sure that the address you have on file at the school is current, so that you receive your gifts in your report cards!

Summary Report Cards

The shorter June report is a summary of student progress, according to widely held grade level expectations, in relation to the learning standards (curricular competencies and content) of the BC Curriculum. Student learning is assessed through a variety of opportunities designed to determine what a student knows, understands and is able to demonstrate. The Proficiency Scale is used to describe progress. Understanding in curricular areas is described as Emerging; Developing; Proficient or Extending.

Throughout the year, you will have seen “Points of Progress”, learning updates or term reports. Communication may have included online posts and paper documentation. This summary report is intended to be a year-end look at progress.

*Due to COVID-19 and unique circumstances this term, attendance is not referenced for April, May and June. We will be mailing report cards to all students who have been at home and learning remotely.

Welcome to New HV Staff

We are excited to welcome some new staff to our school for September. The following teachers are joining the Happy Valley team: Ms. Neissen, Mrs. Ewer, Ms. Murphy and Ms. Jernset.

Lost and Found Treasures

Please check out the clothing that has been left at school. We will be hanging these items on the garden fence on Thursday. Unclaimed clothing will be donated at the end of the month. If you have not picked up your child’s school supplies, they will be available at the garden area on Thursday.

Growing our Garden

Classes have worked hard throughout the year to tend to our beautiful garden. During the summer months, we are looking for help from parents to water the garden. If you are able to take on a week or more of watering, please contact Mrs. O’Regan at moregan@sd62.bc.ca

PAC News

We would like to thank the many parents who attended PAC meetings this year. Virtual meetings have taken the place of monthly gatherings for the past few months, as PAC continues to plan and support our school. We are also grateful to our PAC 2019-2020 Executive for their hard work to make this year such a success. Thank you for volunteering your precious time and exceptional talents.

As some parents move on to new things, we would like to thank them for years of volunteering at Happy Valley. Thanks to Lisa Mercer for her many years as Treasurer and countless hours of volunteering in many ways. Thanks to Brittney Margetts for her work as co-Vice President and her talents behind the scenes with Hot Lunch help, decorating for dances and more. Thanks to Michelle Turner for her work as Secretary and all things PAC! We will miss you! All parents with children at Happy Valley are welcome to attend PAC meetings. We hope to see you in the fall!

September Updates

At this time, we do not know details about the look of school in September. These decisions are guided by the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Provincial Health Officer. We anticipate hearing more news of school planning at the end of August. Parents should continue to check email from the Superintendent, Mr. Scott Stinson, and reference the School District website for updates.

Office Hours

The Happy Valley School office will be open until Friday, July 3th. The school office will reopen on Monday, August 31st in preparation for school opening on Tuesday, September 8th. A notice will go home to all parents during the first week of September with the most current updates.
